COVID-19/J&B FAQ April 02 2020

We've been getting a number of queries regarding the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on our business. So we thought we would answer the most frequent ones.

How long will your store be closed for?

We are in the same position as all clothing retailers in that we can only re-open when the Government gives us permission when it is safe to do so. We hope by June, but it could be as late as September.

How can I buy items from you until then?

From this online store - as long as we are allowed to - and we are still delivering worldwide where countries are still accepting deliveries. We have made all items 15% off in this period, with free delivery and returns for the U.K.

What I usually buy from you I can't find on your website?

We unfortunately don't offer everything we stock on our website. Sometimes this is due to lack of imagery or contractual reasons, but we are working hard to make more items available. Please contact us and will we do our very best to add it to our site.

How can I contact you?

It is best to contact us via sales@jandbmenswear.com, via our Facebook page on messenger or Instagram. Alternatively, you can call us on 016034242929, though our hours are limited 10.30 - 3.45 Mon - Friday and is subject to change.

I only live up the road, can you let me in?

No. Despite being internally manned for service of our website, our shop is closed to the public until it is safe to reopen.

Are brands still sending deliveries to you?

In most cases, we have had our SS20 deliveries in, so we have plenty of stock in most areas. The majority of brands have suspended deliveries as most stores have closed, but the situation is fluid.

What about AW20 deliveries?

This is a big unknown. Usually these would start in July, but much depends on how long the lockdown continues. The longer it lasts, many collections will either be delayed, downsized or cancelled as Brands may decide not to release collections in the current climate.

What about SS21 Collections? How will you be able to view them?

Most Collections are viewed in London, so much depends on how long the lockdown lasts for. Brands could use apps such as Zoom, or more likely, viewing will be delayed by a few months, with smaller collections available.

Will you still be in business after Lockdown?

Absolutely. We have an excellent relationship with all our brand partners who will continue to work with us in this unprecedented and challenging time. While the lockdown is a tremendous burden on all clothing retailers - especially Independents - we will still be here to service our increasingly multi channel based business.

Please keep an eye on this website and social media for updates. Most importantly, stay safe!

UPDATE - COVID 19 - Temporary Magdalen Road Store Closure March 23 2020

With much sadness, we have closed our Magdalen Road store until further notice.

As a family business, we have never had to do this in our 54 year history, but we believe it is vital for everyone to play their part to combat the spread of the Coronavirus, so we can all move forward to better times ahead.

We thank you for your tremendous support and look forward to seeing you when it is safe to do so.

In the meantime we will be concentrating further on our website and will be increasing the amount of products available in the coming days and weeks ahead. 15% offer has been extended until we can reopen our physical store.

The global outbreak of the COVID-19 Coronavirus is having significant consequences to retail industry as we all take action against the spread of the strain. Nobody is under any illusions of how long the outbreak will last, but it is likely to last months.

May Newsletter May 16 2019

We are now coming up to one of our busiest times of the year, with another Bank Holiday approaching and hopefully with some warmer weather on the way.

June will see our buying team start selecting pieces for SS20 and we will keep you up to date with the trends and brands for that season on this site and social media platforms.

This season has seen the successful reintroduction of Ben Sherman, with their top tier 'Archive Collection'. It is important for us as with some other Independents, to have a point of difference from the multiples away from the mass market with more discerning collections. This philosophy will be increased going forward.

Colours & Sons is a new collection for us which will be landing in August. This is related to our best selling shirt brand, Fynch Hatton, but is much more niche and vibrant with unique designs. They do not 'ordinary', so we hope you will like what they have to offer, which will be exclusive to our store in Norwich.

Levi's® continues to be out top denim performer, but sadly due to contractual reasons, this cannot be bought on this platform. However, their sister brand Dockers® is available here and has exceeded our expectations, with their four way stretch chino. A much expanded version of the collection will be available from June.

Brutus have suspended their operation, which is a great shame to us as it was our best selling brand online, particularly in North & South America. Their owner is pursuing other business interests, but if things change with a new collection, you will be the first to know. Original Penguin has been dropped.

We would also like to remind customers that we will no longer be opening on Sundays in December. Changing shopping habits with consumers migrating to online - as with other retailers - means it is no longer patronised to a financially viable level. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

Please keep an eye out for new AW19 items from our brand partners in the coming weeks, which will be a mixture of lighter pieces for the summer and more layered pieces.

We sincerely thank you again for your continued support.

Sunday Closing Announcement January 05 2019

We announce that we will no longer be opening on Sundays from 2019.

Traditionally we have always opened on Sundays in December, as it was particularly useful for those who could not make it to our store during regular hours.

However while our business continues to grow, shopping patterns are shifting from physical to online, with an increasing amount of our customers preferring to use our website means that footfall has become progressively weaker. Sundays have been in annual decline for some years to the point that they are no longer commercially viable.

As we are a family business with limited time off during the year we have decided to spend some much needed time off on Sundays going forward, therefore our store will be closed on that day.

We will still be open 6 days a week and we have invested heavily in our website which is online 24/7 for you to browse and purchase in your own time, so you can still enjoy J&B Menswear in the future.

We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause, but we hope you understand the decision we have made.

If you have any queries, then please do not hesitate to contact us at info@jandbmenswear.com or pop in store.

May/June 2018 Newsletter - The Clothing Seasons - Explained! May 30 2018

Summer in January and Winter in July? Let us explain.

One of the most frequent questions we get from customers is why the clothing seasons don't always represent what is going with the time of year or the weather outside. It's a natural question of which you have our sympathies, as there are certain times of the year when it makes no sense at all

Traditionally the Clothing Industry used to work closer to reality. There were two 'Main' seasons - Spring/Summer (SS) and Autumn/Winter (AW). SS deliveries would be around March/April and likewise AW deliveries September/October. Then somewhere in the mists of time, the Multiples and Department Stores wanted items earlier. And earlier. And earlier. And earlier. Then 'Pre-Collections' appeared, which meant SS could be in November and AW in May. That is not a typo error.

Illogical from either a consumer lead and business lead perspective, this gave the Independent businesses like ourselves a bit of headache. This meant taking some stock in much earlier than what would be considered sensible and booking even further ahead. With Crystal Balls in short supply, never underestimate the risk involved for your local Independent, because experience is the key in getting it right. Getting it wrong is not an option.

Below is what the seasons are in our Industry, with usual ordering time for us between six and twelve months before delivery in most cases.

Jan/Feb/March - Spring/Summer

April - Spring/Summer & High Summer

May - High Summer & Pre Autumn/Winter

June - Pre Autumn/Winter

July/Aug/Sept - Autumn/Winter

Oct - Autumn/Winter

Nov/Dec - Pre Spring/Summer

We do our level best at catering for all items and all times and some of our customer base rely on us having 'out of season' items, but as our guide shows if you want a pair of shorts in August for example, or a Winter coat in February, it may get tricky so we always advise to 'plan ahead' on key seasonal purchases.

In our next blog, we will bring you some shots of SS19 Collections from our brand portfolio and all the latest news and we thank all our customers both in store and online for their continued and loyal support, which is very much appreciated.

If you have any queries or thoughts on the above, please contact us at info@jandbmenswear.com

Fred Perry Special Offer! April 27 2018

The Fred Perry tennis bomber was the original warm-up jacket from the courts of the ‘50s. It was taken from the shoulders of tennis champions, onto the backs of British subcultures. The bold design looks to vintage sports stripes in team colours. The angled collar is inspired by the Fred Perry shirt.

We have just a few left, so reduced from £159.00 to £129.00 which includes FREE U.K & EU shipping!

March 2018 Newsletter March 06 2018

After buying all the AW18 Collections in February, March has already seen many of the new SS18 Collections being delivered, which will be compete by the end of the month, especially Fynch Hatton, which proved a great success upon its arrival last year. It also saw the unwelcome amount of snow, which threw a curveball as much of the summer stock is short sleeve, but we always maintain a good level of heavier product which certainly came in handy for those that did manage to venture out - plus those who rather preferred to stay indoors and order from us online.

We apologise if any of you got your online deliveries slightly late. Wednesday and Thursday of last week proved too much from Royal Mail, so we personally took the parcels to the Norwich sorting office so they would be first in the queue when things got back to normal.

Our first drop of Fila® has been presented in its new area instore, alongside Lacoste and Fred Perry for an increased display of Sports Heritage (see above). The full collection will not be online yet, as we await images and another drop late this month, but we are pleased with the reaction of this cult heritage brand, despite the cold conditions.

Please note that we will be open as always on Good Friday, but not Easter Monday. Royal Mail do not collect on Bank Holidays, so any orders received will be shipped the next working day.

We look forward to seeing you instore - or online - in the coming weeks. J&B has never looked so good!

February 2018 Newsletter January 24 2018

We will be keeping you updated on a monthly basis on what is happening at J&B Menswear.

February will see much of the SS18 Collections being delivered, including new brand partner FILA which were are very excited about. This will have large presence in store and online and we will be offering across the board, including Track Tops, Hoodies. Tees, Polo, Joggers and Shorts.

After trialing ORIGINAL PENGUIN last season, we will have a much expanded collection this Spring, which will full of colour with pastels being a big feature.

Our LACOSTE selection will also be expanded and given its own exclusive area, will an expansion of their Underwear, Tees and including shorts, tops and joggers as we go through the season.

LEVI'S® and FRED PERRY Spring Collections are strong, with an extra focus on Retro Sportswear.

BRUTUS will be landing their first drop of SS18 in the first week of February, all of which is currently to preview online.

FYNCH HATTON goes from strength to strength and we will be seeing the first efforts of their Spring'18 Collection too,

It is always sad to day goodbye to our brand partners, but after many years we have decided to drop BEN SHERMAN and phase out PEPE JEANS LONDON. Both excellent brands in their day, but no longer provide the high standards and desirability of which our customers and ourselves demand.

Our in store refurb is ongoing with improved lighting, revised signage and increased use of bespoke tables for a more open feel and ease of navigation.

The buying team have just started ordering AW18 Collections, with a three day trip planned in London early next month of which we will show you the results on these pages and all our social media outlets.

More from us next month!

J&B Team
